A Time to Plant Reviewed in Country Life Magazine!

We were delighted to read the review of Lord Cavendish’s book, A Time to Plant in this month’s issue of Country Life magazine. In the July 18th issue, on sale now, Leslie Geddes-Brown gives a wonderful review of the book and a ‘thumbs up’ for all those that might be considering a new read.

A Time to Plant is available to buy at the Holker Gift Shop priced £25. An entertaining and thought provoking read, A Time to Plant is the story of a family, of a life, of a community, of continuity with the past and adaption to the modern age. Hugh Cavendish writes about the history of Holker which dates back to the 16th Century and has never been bought or sold but has passed by inheritance through the family line. He describes his own life, as a child at Holker (“when I look back I allow myself the indulgence of believing I was not quite as stupid as my schoolmasters held me to be; nor quite as lazy”) and later as the owner of Holker, finding a way of managing huge resources and responsibilities and also immense debt. And, of course, he writes about the garden.

A Time to Plant; Life and Gardening at Holker is published by Frances Lincoln, photography by Grania Cavendish. For more information visit the website www.holker.co.uk.
