As the Holker Garden Festival gets ready to celebrate its 22nd year, we meet some of the exhibitors that are preparing to make this year’s show the best yet.
The festival team are delighted to welcome back Matthew Smith of Brighter Blooms as he exhibits for his 5th year. At 33, Matthew is part of a younger generation of horticulturists and having launched in 2010 in Preston, Lancashire, Brighter Blooms has grown from strength to strength. “Back in 2010 the Holker Garden Festival was my very first show. Whilst it has been a lot of very hard work, it has also been very rewarding.”
Brighter Blooms will have two stands at the festival. Stand one will feature Zantedeschia in a single genus island display with around ten varieties on show and sales plants of each variety. The display will be laid out in a patio style with the Zantedeschia planted in containers. This is the best way to grow them and Matthew says it will show the public a great way to brighten their patio for the summer. The second stand is a display of salad and vegetables grown in containers and Matthew hopes to have around twenty different salads and salad mixes on display.
Matthew will be fresh from Chelsea as he exhibits there for the very first time but he says that Holker is one of his favourite events. “Location plays a major part, the surrounding countryside is idyllic, combine that with the very friendly nature of the show organisers and it’s very difficult to get stressed whilst setting up at Holker.”

This weekend’s damp weather didn’t affect the fiery fun at Holker with a full house for the chilli eating competitions hosted by Darth Naga. A packed Courtyard watched on as 10 competitors (on each day) took part in the lively competition. Saturday’s competition was the most entertaining yet with Darth commenting it was best one he had ever hosted - humorous contestants were encouraged by the lively crowd - with Jordan from Barrow taking centre stage. Joint winners took the trophy on Saturday and Ed Duffy was crowned Sunday’s winner after reaching around 250,000 scovilles.
