TV allotment show semi-finalists attend 23rd Holker Garden Festival

With TV gardening presenter James Wong already announced as a guest on Saturday 30th May,  the team behind the 23rd Holker Garden Festival are delighted to also confirm that Gary Murdock and Pete Taylor;  semi -finalists on series one of BBC Two’s The Big Allotment Challenge, will be attending this year’s show!

Gary and Pete will be bringing their refreshingly laid back attitude to gardening in to the Holker Garden Theatre, where they will share stories of their amazing TV show experience, as well as life as allotment gardeners.

Best friends and IT specialists, the pair became familiar faces on our TV screens as they reached the semi-finals in the first series of the popular grow your own show.  With the ethos - maximum yield for minimum effort, the bearded duo share an allotment in Hove, East Sussex, along with a passion for home grown produce.  On their patch of land they aim to grow fruit, vegetables and flowers, and by popular demand, they are now cooking and selling their pickles and preserves which featured on the show!

They can also occasionally be found donning a hat and veil; tending to their bees, and many posts on their blog - www.garyandpete.com showcase their homemade honey, bees wax furniture polish and even mead!   Quite fitting, as the Holker Garden Festival also welcomes the Furness Beekeepers Association who will be attending to promote the craft of bee-keeping, and give help and advice to people interested in keeping bees.

Hosted by the Cavendish family in the grounds of Holker Hall & Gardens in Cark-in-Cartmel, Cumbria, the Holker Garden Festival is a three day event taking place from Friday 29th May to Sunday 31st May 2015.  The festival showcases the very best of gardening, countryside, food and crafts, with a vibrant mix of horticultural displays, fragrance filled marquees, striking show gardens, country crafts and artisan produce.  Opening times are from 10.00am to 5.30pm.  Entrance to the festival is £15.50 for adults and £14.00 for seniors/students; discounts for advance bookings are available online.  Children under 16’s go free when accompanied by an adult.  For tickets and more information visit www.holkerfestival.co.uk.

Full house for popular chilli eating competition

This weekend’s damp weather didn’t affect the fiery fun at Holker with a full house for the chilli eating competitions hosted by Darth Naga.  A packed Courtyard watched on as 10 competitors (on each day) took part in the lively competition.   Saturday’s competition was the most entertaining yet with Darth commenting it was best one he had ever hosted - humorous contestants were encouraged by the lively crowd - with Jordan from Barrow taking centre stage.  Joint winners took the trophy on Saturday and Ed Duffy was crowned Sunday’s winner after reaching around 250,000 scovilles.
