Calling all landscapers, gardeners and designers!

The Holker Garden Festival is now accepting entries for its 24th annual Show Garden competition and is calling for landscapers, gardeners and designers to showcase their designs, products and talents.

Widely regarded as the North’s premier gardening event, the Show Gardens are the focal point of the summer event, taking centre stage on the showground with this year’s theme of, ‘Gardening Through the Generations.’

All Show Gardens will be officially judged and awarded a Large Gold, Gold, Silver Gilt, Silver or Bronze by the judges including, Rae Beckwith, Vice-Chairman of The Guild of Horticultural Trade Display Judges.

Rae comments, “During the years that I have been involved at Holker the quality of the Show Gardens has improved to the excellent standard that we see today. The skills and artistic flair displayed are a credit to all who create the wonderful gardens that the visiting public appreciate so much.  Many commissions for further work have been gained as a result of the show gardens, which bears testimony to the value of the wonderful platform that Holker provides.”

With 20,000 visitors across three days, show garden exhibitors will have a captive audience, with great potential to generate future work.   Other benefits include excellent prize money, free space for your Show Garden, water and electricity, great publicity, inclusion in Festival marketing in print and online, plus, with the chance to meet and be photographed with TV gardening personality, Charlie Dimmock, in your garden - it’s an opportunity not to be missed.

John Roberts of Sharp Paving, Kendal, Cumbria, has designed and installed a Show Garden at the Festival for the past 11 years, “The first was an experiment to see if it was useful to my business and to test our abilities in design and workmanship. I achieved a Silver Gilt which I was very pleased with, but more importantly I gained some significant contacts, enquiries and over £160,000 worth of work.”

John has since gone on to achieve 7 Best in Shows and generated well over a million pounds worth of business.

“Although the Festival occurs when most landscapers are very busy, the pleasure of taking part, testing your abilities to please yourselves, the public and the judges, it gives you a great advert of real work and with an audience over 20,000, a fantastic opportunity to brand your name and talents.  As well as this, the help and promotion you have from the Holker staff is second to none, which adds the finishing touches and ensures that you gain the best chances possible. I would suggest like I did 11 years ago, give it a go and you may be very surprised what fun and pleasure, as well as great for your future business it can be, it’s really worth the effort.” John added.

A gardens total display area must be a minimum of 6m x 6m, however new exhibitors will be offered an 8m x 8m plot.  Entries must be made by 16th February 2016.

Full house for popular chilli eating competition

This weekend’s damp weather didn’t affect the fiery fun at Holker with a full house for the chilli eating competitions hosted by Darth Naga.  A packed Courtyard watched on as 10 competitors (on each day) took part in the lively competition.   Saturday’s competition was the most entertaining yet with Darth commenting it was best one he had ever hosted - humorous contestants were encouraged by the lively crowd - with Jordan from Barrow taking centre stage.  Joint winners took the trophy on Saturday and Ed Duffy was crowned Sunday’s winner after reaching around 250,000 scovilles.
