Couples planning to say ‘I Do’ in Cumbria now have the opportunity to choose one of the County’s finest and romantic stately homes as their wedding venue.
Home to the Cavendish Family for over 400 years, Holker Hall and Gardens, near Cark-in-Cartmel, has been granted a licence to hold wedding ceremonies.
Holker Hall dates back to the early 1600’s and has been passed by inheritance through the family line. Today, the Hall is home to Lucy Cavendish, appointed Chairman of the Holker Group last year.
Couples will have a choice of rooms for the Wedding Ceremony, including the Library. With open fire places at either end and lined with over 3,500 books, Lord Cavendish once described it as ‘the cosiest room in the house’. Views through Formal Gardens in to the Park, make the Library perfectly suited to small, intimate ceremonies of up to 20 guests.
The Main Hall offers a magnificent setting for larger celebrations, with couples taking their vows beneath the splendid limestone arch, which sits at the foot of the hand-carved oak staircase.
Holker is surrounded by award-winning gardens, against a backdrop of 125 acres of Parkland, home to an ancient herd of Fallow deer. In all seasons, this offers a variety of opportunities for unique wedding photographs to preserve memories of an elegant day.
“I hope that the history, setting and, above all, the romance of Holker, will inspire couples celebrating one of the most important days of their lives. It will be a privilege to share Holker with them.” says Lucy.
Choices of locations for the Wedding Breakfast include the newly refurbished Brasserie in the stable courtyard which is due to open in the Spring. The deer park offers a spectacular setting for a bespoke marquee or couples can choose the Grandstand at nearby Cartmel Racecourse.
On-site caterers and event specialists Rowleys@Holker will take care of every final detail, to ensure a celebration of the highest quality.
Lucy adds, “Ever since I can remember, it has been my Family’s aspiration to enhance the experience of our visitors. It is heart warming we are now able to welcome brides and grooms-to-be with their families and friends.”
Holker Hall and Gardens is available for weddings from Spring 2016. For further information and to arrange a viewing, please call 015395 58328. Wedding Fair coming soon - look out in the press and on the website for further information.

This weekend’s damp weather didn’t affect the fiery fun at Holker with a full house for the chilli eating competitions hosted by Darth Naga. A packed Courtyard watched on as 10 competitors (on each day) took part in the lively competition. Saturday’s competition was the most entertaining yet with Darth commenting it was best one he had ever hosted - humorous contestants were encouraged by the lively crowd - with Jordan from Barrow taking centre stage. Joint winners took the trophy on Saturday and Ed Duffy was crowned Sunday’s winner after reaching around 250,000 scovilles.
