A fantastic new art event with free entry to the public will be hosted in the courtyard at Holker Hall on May 1st 2016 from 10.30am to 4.00pm. The event aims to bring together some of the best professional and amateur painters and printmakers from Cumbria and the North West and will showcase the extraordinary artistic talent from this area. Artists who have registered for the event include painters who specialise in landscapes, animals, portraits, floral and other themes.
The event which is limited to painters and printmakers is unique in the area and will take the format of an open art market. Artists will be present at their stalls to discuss their artwork and take commissions from the public. An array of artwork in a range of media and themes will be available as original work as well as giclée prints and cards at affordable prices.
The organiser, John Driskel, said "As a local artist I have always felt that there is a shortage of local outdoor art markets which are so popular on the continent and other parts of the world.
We are aiming to address this by hosting a number of local markets dedicated to painters and printmakers during the following months and we are very excited that Holker Hall has offered us a venue for some of these on the Estate on 1st of May and at their Garden Festival in June. We hope that we will be able to establish a regular outdoor programme for local artists and that support of our events by the public will grow as we move forward with the project."
The art market together with other facilities on the Estate provides an opportunity for a fantastic day out for the whole family. A wonderful breakfast and lunch can also be ordered from the Cafe and there is free access to the Food Hall and Gift Shop. Access to the Hall and Gardens is available for £12 per person.
Holker Hall’s Head of Visitor Services, Jillian Rouse commented “We are delighted to add the Art Market to our growing calendar of events and look forward to seeing the artwork”.

The Ilex Bar & BrasserieOpen for lunches - including a very special Sunday lunch -
This weekend’s damp weather didn’t affect the fiery fun at Holker with a full house for the chilli eating competitions hosted by Darth Naga. A packed Courtyard watched on as 10 competitors (on each day) took part in the lively competition. Saturday’s competition was the most entertaining yet with Darth commenting it was best one he had ever hosted - humorous contestants were encouraged by the lively crowd - with Jordan from Barrow taking centre stage. Joint winners took the trophy on Saturday and Ed Duffy was crowned Sunday’s winner after reaching around 250,000 scovilles.
