Great Estates

Holker featured on Countryfile over Christmas as one of the countries great estates. Watch it now on BBC i-player.

Many of our visitors may remember the visit of Countryfile’s Matt Baker to Holker in the Summer of 2010. Over the Christmas break the programme featured Holker again in the context of other great estates in the UK and featured Matt’s original interview with Lord Cavendish. If you missed the programme it is still available on BBC’s i-player – the edition was screened on Wednesday 28th December 2011.

An extract from the programme summary......
Ellie Harrison explores some of Britain's finest country estates. She visits the Ernest Cook estate in Gloucestershire, looking at the legacy left by the philanthropist and recluse. She also delves into the Countryfile archives and re-visits Matt Baker's visit to the historic Holker estate in Cumbria.
Julia Bradbury is at the Goodwood estate in West Sussex exploring its racing heritage, whilst Adam Henson is at Castle Howard in North Yorkshire meeting the tenant farmers who have been working on the estate for the last four generations.

Full house for popular chilli eating competition

This weekend’s damp weather didn’t affect the fiery fun at Holker with a full house for the chilli eating competitions hosted by Darth Naga.  A packed Courtyard watched on as 10 competitors (on each day) took part in the lively competition.   Saturday’s competition was the most entertaining yet with Darth commenting it was best one he had ever hosted - humorous contestants were encouraged by the lively crowd - with Jordan from Barrow taking centre stage.  Joint winners took the trophy on Saturday and Ed Duffy was crowned Sunday’s winner after reaching around 250,000 scovilles.
