The Holker Garden Festival in Cumbria celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with a feast for all the senses; bringing together the very best of gardening, countryside, food and crafts. The 2012 Festival looks to be the most exciting one yet, with many brand new attractions, events and exhibitors.

 

 This spectacular three day event takes place from Friday 8th June to Sunday 10th June 2012 and offers something for all the family. Whether you’re a gardening enthusiast looking for a rare plant or a family wanting a fun packed day out, here are 20 reasons to come and enjoy the north’s premier gardening event this summer:

 

  1. Garden enthusiasts can delight in award winning show gardens and take home inspiration for their own gardens
  2. Children can get creative with a wide selection of country crafts from games and activities to outdoor crafts
  3. Expert horticulturists can browse the horticultural and floral art marquees taking in magnificent, award winning displays of rare and unusual plants
  4. Sit back, relax and listen to the sounds of live music from the traditional bandstand
  5. Foodies will be spoilt for choice with a wide selection of artisan produce in the Made in Cumbria Food Hall
  6. Visit the Holker Festival Garden Theatre to hear garden experts share their experiences, with lots of opportunities to ask questions
  7. Experience all the fun of the fair at the traditional Victorian fairground, with various attractions including hoopla, balls in a jar, tin can alley and coconut shies
  8. For a taste of the country, the countryside crafts provide an authentic rural experience
  9. Become a Festival VIP for the day on Friday 8th June with exclusive tickets available, allowing you to enjoy morning coffee, a delicious lunchtime Cumbrian platter and afternoon tea as well as priority parking
  10. Tours of the Holker Gardens will take place daily with Head Gardener Yvonne Cannon sharing the secrets of these magnificent formal Gardens
  11. Watch traditional craftsman at work, including demonstrations of rural skills such as dry stone walling
  12. Shopaholics will be able to browse over 200 exhibitors at the Festival, with the opportunity to buy wonderful unique gifts such as handmade jewellery, clothing and artwork
  13. Enjoy the magnificent views across 200 acres of natural parkland
  14. Talks and demonstrations on everything from outdoor skills and planting edible foods to country crafts suitable for all the family
  15. From barbeques to afternoon tea and paella to strawberries and cream, whatever your tastes, choose from a wonderful selection of food to enjoy whilst you browse the Festival
  16. Take part in the charity auction for St Mary’s Hospice with wonderful gifts and experiences on offer
  17. Take a guided tour of the magnificent Holker Hall and learn more about this picturesque mansion which is the home of Lord and Lady Cavendish
  18. Enjoy a variety of live and exciting attractions including the Drakes of Hazard and Terrier Racing
  19. Visit the Holker Courtyard Café for a delicious variety of homemade dishes and the chance to unwind in the period setting of Holker Hall
  20. Don’t forget to stop off at the Holker Food Hall before you leave for the chance to take home delicious Estate produce

 

Opening times for the 2012 Holker Garden Festival are from 10.00am to 5.30pm. Entrance to the Holker Garden Festival is £15.00 for adults and £13.50 for seniors/students; discounts for advance bookings are available online. Full house for popular chilli eating competition

This weekend’s damp weather didn’t affect the fiery fun at Holker with a full house for the chilli eating competitions hosted by Darth Naga.  A packed Courtyard watched on as 10 competitors (on each day) took part in the lively competition.   Saturday’s competition was the most entertaining yet with Darth commenting it was best one he had ever hosted - humorous contestants were encouraged by the lively crowd - with Jordan from Barrow taking centre stage.  Joint winners took the trophy on Saturday and Ed Duffy was crowned Sunday’s winner after reaching around 250,000 scovilles.
