Holker Hall & Gardens is launching its first ever photography competition to find the perfect shot for the 2012 Holker Hall & Gardens ‘Days You’ll Remember’ visitor leaflet. Amateur photographers will be invited into the Gardens at Holker on four dedicated days during August to photograph any area of the public Gardens, exterior of the Hall or open parkland which covers over 20 acres and will be asked to submit their favourite Holker photograph by the end of August.
The competition is open to amateur photographers and the winner will be selected by Holker Hall and professional photographer, Val Corbett. The winning photograph will be featured along with a credit to the winner, in the 2012 Holker Hall & Gardens ‘Days You’ll Remember’ leaflet with 120,000 copies printed and distributed across the North West region.
Val Corbett lives on the eastern fringes of the Lake District and has worked as a freelance photographer for the past 25 years. Taking inspiration from the beautiful surroundings of Cumbria, Val is recognised for her garden photography, which is regularly featured in national publications. Val has photographed the Holker Gardens many times and believes it will provide the perfect setting for a photography competition. Val comments, “The Gardens and Parklands at Holker are a real hidden treasure, a mixture of formal gardens and the wide open spaces of the parkland, there’s a photograph around every corner. I’m looking forward to seeing the entries for the Holker photography competition.”

This weekend’s damp weather didn’t affect the fiery fun at Holker with a full house for the chilli eating competitions hosted by Darth Naga. A packed Courtyard watched on as 10 competitors (on each day) took part in the lively competition. Saturday’s competition was the most entertaining yet with Darth commenting it was best one he had ever hosted - humorous contestants were encouraged by the lively crowd - with Jordan from Barrow taking centre stage. Joint winners took the trophy on Saturday and Ed Duffy was crowned Sunday’s winner after reaching around 250,000 scovilles.
