Holker Hall has long been a support of local food and producers and the Producers' Markets at Holker were an initiative that followed as a natural step from the set up of the Holker Food Hall almost six years ago. Cumbria has many artisan producers and the Holker Producers' Markets aim to offer visitors an opportunity to come and see them all within the grounds of one of Cumbria's best loved stately homes. Due to the growing popularity of the Producers' Markets Holker has added extra dates to the calendar for 2010. In total nine markets will take place on Sunday's throughout the year, with producers attending from Cumbria and Lancashire the markets offer a great opportunity to meet with some of the producers personally and find out more about them and their products.
Some of the best bakers in the region will be attending the markets including More the Artisan Bakery, based in Staveley near Kendal. From simple morning rolls to complex specialities such as More's sourdough miche or full grain rye there is something to suit every taste. Local chef Patrick Moore set up the bakery in 2006 and uses only the finest quality, natural ingredients in his breads and patisseries. As a true artisan, he believes in hand crafting honest products and reviving traditional baking techniques.
Those with a sweet tooth will be spoilt for choice with a range of treats. Award winning Country Fare will be bringing their mouth watering hand made cakes and biscuits all prepared using local ingredients. Or for something a little more indulgent the Pudding Room of Coniston will be offering traditional homemade puddings include Rich Chocolate Brownie Pudding and Rum 'n' Raisin Sticky Date Pudding.
Family run business Kendal Cordials will be quenching thirsts with a range of delicious hand made cordials with classics such as ginger beer and lime cordial as well as something for the more adventurous with Strawberry and Crushed Black Pepper.
Kendal based family run farm, Savin Hill, aims to preserve England's traditional native breeds and will be showcasing some of its finest meats at the market. The farm breeds and rears Middle White Pigs, British Saddleback Pigs and British White Cattle.
There will also be a chance to try and buy some of the produce that comes out of the Holker Estate Farms including Holker Dairy Farm cheeses. Martin Gott has been a tenant farmer on the Holker Estate for four years. He set up the Holker Farm Dairy in 2006 and now produces some nationally recognised signature cheese including two raw milk cheeses named St James and Swallet both made from the milk of their flock of ewes.
Other Holker produce includes Shorthorn Cattle, Herdwick Lamb and Saltmarsh Lamb and venison seasonally sold through the Food Hall at Holker and can be tasted on the Courtyard barbeque during the Producers' Markets. The Holker Cafe produces a fantastic range of cakes and excellent traditional home cooked food. Holker Hall is open from 11.00am-4.00pm and the gardens and retail outlets from 10.30am-5.30pm. Both the hall and gardens are closed on Saturdays. Entrance to the hall & gardens is £10.00 for adults, £9.00 for concessions and £5.50 for children (aged 6-15 years). A family ticket is £27.50. Groups of 10 or more people will benefit from reduced rates.
