The Lake District
Picture Cumbria and the Lake District and you may well think of windswept fells
and walking boots. Yet there is so much more to see and enjoy - from castles,
historic houses and gardens - to phenomenal Michelin starred restaurants and
hotels. As well as the superb facilities and incredible venues, the landscape is
as romantic as it gets.
For well over a hundred years the major draw for
visitors to Cumbria has been the inspirational beauty of its fells, lakes and
valleys. But increasing numbers are now coming here to savour a different
delight: the food and drink that is served, sold and produced in places right
across the county including Holker.
When Wastwater in the Western Lake
District was awarded the title of ‘Britain’s favourite view’ in a competition
run by ITV in 2007 it will have come as no surprise to the millions of people
who delight in this magical part of England. It’s an area which has inspired
writers and artists like William Wordsworth, John Ruskin, Beatrix Potter and
Arthur Ransome, drawn walkers and climbers, and brought immense pleasure to
those who simply desire a change of pace in this increasingly busy
world.
