Fiery fun at the 5th Holker Chilli Fest
The 5th Holker Chilli Fest took place last weekend and a damp start didn’t deter the chilli enthusiasts from enjoying some fiery fun with 2,600 people flocking to the two day event.
It was another full house for the popular chilli eating competitions hosted by Darth Naga. A packed Courtyard watched on as 7 competitors on the Saturday and 10 on the Sunday took part in the competition. Encouraged by the lively crowd, Pete Weir from Leyland and Natasha Jones from Grange over Sands were joint winners on the Saturday after going 12 rounds, with the last chilli eaten being a Carolina Reaper at approx. 2.5 million scovilles. Natasha entered again on the Sunday and took the trophy after 7 rounds.
The crowds enjoyed the lively entertainment including Freda the Dinner Lady, Andy Jester and his fire performances and, new for this year the live band, The Thieving Magpies. A wide array of exhibitors set up stall in colourful marquees – all in fantastic spirits – (with some real characters like Screaming Chimp and their sauces) selling all things chilli, from plants and seeds to oils and spices. Plenty of fiery food was devoured with the queues building as visitors enjoyed everything hot and spicy from pizzas to curry – many then paid a visit to the ice cream stall!
Organisers were delighted to see a tremendous amount of dogs attending the event, including Oscar who enjoyed the Chilli Fest selfie station!
Jillian Rouse, Head of Visitor Services comments “It’s been a fantastic weekend and we’re really pleased that so many people turned out to enjoy it. Highlights had to be the chilli eating competition and the brave people that took on the challenge. Plus, it was great to be the chosen venue for the launch of the ‘World’s Hottest Pizza’, I know a lot of people sampled it and the feedback was very good!”
The Chilli Fest will return for its 6th year in 2019!
