What a week!
We certainly know how to start May off with a bang and we didn’t do it by halves! A busy Bank holiday weekend led straight into the wonderfully talented gardener, Sarah Raven and team’s range of courses held in our courtyard. Quickly followed by our fantastic Spring Fair weekend. Safe to say the team worked tirelessly to create an extraordinary week, enjoyed by so many!
Sarah Raven last visited Holker Hall & Gardens back in 2019 for two days to run her sell out courses. All to do with her cutting garden, flowers, vegetables and so much more. We were over the moon to be able to welcome her and the team back this year and for four days this time. The courses on offer were:
- A Year Full of Flowers with Sarah Raven
- The Cutting Garden with Sarah Raven
- Magnificent Pots with Sarah Raven & Arthur Parkinson
- A Year Full of Greens with Sarah Raven
Many a green-fingered fanatic joined Sarah, Arthur, Jemima & Caroline for a wonderful day filled with lectures, demonstrations and of course, delicious food! All recipes were provided by the team in advance and were all from Sarah Raven’s own cookbooks. Everything had a focus on fresh, healthy and as close to field to fork as possible – even down to the cake!
Friday afternoon may have seen the last course take place, but it was the beginning of the Spring Fair. Preparations had been taking place in terms of the build during the week but Friday evening always sees us welcome many of our traders arrive to get a head start on their setup for the upcoming weekend of festivities. It’s always so wonderful to see many familiar faces with our returning traders, but to open our arms to new traders is just as exciting.
The weather was certainly on our side as Saturday morning strolled in. The sun graced us with its presence and we opened up the gates to an incredible weekend of Spring purchases, live music from talented local musicians led by Jon Dawes (including Evie Plumb), walkabout entertainment from Funcaster characters Cruella De Vil and her henchman, The Bread & Butter theatre company as the ever hilarious flowerpot men and the return of our Fun Dog Show.
There were over 80 stands selling everything from garden ornaments and flowers, cosmetics and dog treats to a refreshing cold cocktail and something a little different to eat. All topped off with three classes each day for our Fun Dog Show – we have never seen so many dogs here at Holker! From the absolute teeny tiny dogs to the dogs you could confuse for a horse, we saw them all. Each class was fit to bursting and the addition of the agility class this year certainly put our Holker Hounds to the test! Congratulations to every pooch than placed and even bigger congratulations to every dog and owner that took part (and weren’t caught in a giant net!).
2022 is certainly the year where we are getting back to normal and this week was the perfect way to celebrate that. Thank you to everyone who came through and made the first week of May such an incredible week.
