The Cavendish, Burlington & Lady Moyra Walks
(A plan of the gardens is available when you purchase your ticket and includes a series of Garden walks.)
The purpose of the walks is merely to give an indication of what can be seen in the gardens. There are many plants, trees and shrubs which, for reasons of space, cannot be included in the guide but which deserve close inspection. Visitors are invited to wander freely.
Due to the natural layout of the gardens, it has not so far been possible to supply ramps to all areas and steep banking and steps may cause some access difficulties. It is therefore recommended that the Cavendish Walk, as far as the Sunken Garden is suitable for those with wheelchairs or prams.
The Burlington Walk requires around an hour and the Lady Moyra Walk around 30-45 minutes. The complete Cavendish Walk is a comfortable and enjoyable hour and a half, although it has been known to take all day.
On the approach to the Cascade the vista from here is framed by rhododendrons and evergreen oak trees, which then leads to the top of the cascade which is surmounted by a marble statue of Neptune, a beautiful example of 17th century Italian craftsmanship.
The upper half of the new cascade was built in 1988 by the Estate staff with the addition, in 1991, of the approaches to the fountain and completion of the lower cascade. Although there is a pump to recirculate the water, a network of underground streams has been located with the help of a water diviner. It is hoped that a natural flow for the cascade can be achieved for most, if not all of the year.
