Autumn has arrived! It’s time to dive into one of the season’s biggest tridations—building your own scarecrow! Whether you’re looking to add a bit of autumnal flair to your garden or to experience some seasonal family fun, crafting a scarecrow is the perfect way to welcome the change of season. So let’s get creative and craft a festive fall friend that’ll stand watch over your garden all season long!

Our Step-by-Step Guide for Crafting Your Very Own Scarecrow

What You’ll Need

Before you begin, gather these essential materials:

  • Old clothes: A flannel shirt, dungarees, or jeans will give your scarecrow that rustic charm.
  • Stuffing: Hay or straw works best, but you can also use leaves or old newspapers.
  • Poles or sticks: Two sturdy wooden poles for the body frame (one vertical for the spine and one horizontal for the arms).
  • Hessian or pillowcase: For the head.
  • Markers or paints: To create a friendly (or spooky!) face.
  • Accessories: Old hats, gloves, scarves—anything to add personality!
  • Twine or string: To tie everything together.

Optional extras could include buttons for eyes, an old bandana for a pop of colour, or even a pumpkin head if you’re feeling adventurous.

The Steps

  1. Build the Frame

The backbone of your scarecrow is, quite literally, a stick figure. Start with two wooden poles—one should be around 5 to 6 feet tall (for the body), and the other about 3 to 4 feet (for the arms). Secure them together in a cross shape using strings or twine, making sure that the “arms” sit a little below the top of the body.

  1. Dress Your Scarecrow

Next, it’s time to dress up your new friend! Slide an old flannel shirt over the horizontal arm pole and secure it at the wrists and waist using string. If you’ve chosen a pair of dungarees, jeans, or a dress, secure those around the bottom of the vertical pole. If you’re feeling fancy, you can tuck the shirt into the trousers for a tidier look. Don’t worry if things look a little loose, we’ll fix that when we stuff your scarecrow in the next step!

  1. Stuff the Body

Now comes the fun part—the stuffing! Grab your hay, straw, or whatever filling you’re using, and begin stuffing the shirt, trousers, and sleeves. Aim for a nice plump shape, but don’t overdo it—your scarecrow should look full, not bloated! Secure the ends of the shirt and pants with twine to keep the stuffing in place. For extra sturdiness, you can tie the trousers to the body pole as well. This will ensure your scarecrow stands tall, even on the windest of autumn days.

  1. Create the Head

For the head, you can use a hessian sack, an old pillowcase, or even a carved pumpkin. If you’re going with fabric, stuff it with hay or straw until it’s nice and round. Tie it off at the neck and secure it to the top of the vertical pole. Use bold pens, paints, or fabric scraps to give your scarecrow a face. Whether you want a traditional smile, a spooky Halloween vibe, or something a little more goofy, this is where your creativity shines. Feel free to add some wild hair using yarn, fabric strips, or even straw.

  1. Add the Final Touches

Now that your scarecrow has a body and face, it’s time for the finishing touches. Add a hat to give it some style—maybe a straw sunhat or a cosy beanie. If you have gloves, slip them on the ends of the arms. Drape a scarf around the neck for a cosy autumnal look, or wrap a bandana around the head for some extra flair. Want to go the extra mile? Give your scarecrow some personality by adding props—maybe a garden tool or a pumpkin companion.

  1. Display Your Scarecrow

Your scarecrow is now ready to take its place of honour in your garden. If you’re placing it in a garden bed, you can simply push the pole into the ground to keep it standing tall. Alternatively, prop it up in a garden chair for a more relaxed, laid-back vibe.

Creating a scarecrow is the ultimate family fun autumn activity, blending creativity with the beauty of the season. Not only does it add charm to your home, but it also allows you to upcycle materials and spend quality time with your little ones. So, gather your supplies and let your imagination run wild!
