As we prepare to open the gardens for the 2026 season on 18 March, there’s a real sense of anticipation here at Holker. After the quieter months of winter, spring’s arrival means a wonderful succession of colour and scent unfolding across our 25 acres of formal gardens, woodland and wildflower meadows — and this year promises to be especially lovely.
One of the most eagerly awaited sights is always our magnolia display. With around 130 trees and many different varieties thriving here, the first flush of their extravagant blooms is nothing short of spectacular. These early flowering magnolias — some opening even before their leaves come through — create a breathtaking spectacle of pinks and whites against the still-fresh greens of early spring.

By mid-March the gardens are already showing other spring stars. Camellias — glossy, evergreen shrubs with globe-shaped blooms — are often still in flower, adding vibrant colour when many other plants are just waking up. Alongside them, rhododendrons have been one of the earliest woody bloomers, their clusters of rich flowers lighting up the shrub borders and woodland edges.
Of course, you can’t talk about spring without mentioning daffodils. Daffodil drifts lift the spirits across the garden lawns and borders, their cheerful yellow and cream heads dancing in the breeze and leading the way for the season ahead.

Another highlight this time of year is our bluebell woods. As the canopy above begins to leaf, carpets of bluebells emerge through the woodland floor, creating that classic Cumbrian spring scene — delicate, fleeting and unforgettable.
But spring at Holker isn’t just about the big ticket names. Around every corner there’s promise: early tulips lifting their bright cups; emerging perennials pushing through fresh soil; and the first insects buzzing over newly opened flowers.
If you’re planning a visit after 18 March, our advice is simply this: bring time. Wander slowly, breathe deeply, and let the gardens’ seasonal drama unfold beneath your feet and overhead. Spring here is a celebration of renewal — brilliant in colour, rich in texture, and full of life.
We can’t wait to welcome you.
