Holker Hall & Gardens is proud to present the deeply moving and visually striking Good Souls Exhibition, created by acclaimed artist, author, and humanitarian Bob Sutcliffe OBE, in collaboration with renowned Cumbrian photographer Tiree Dawson. Set against the backdrop of the Lake District’s southern fringe, this exhibition is a heartfelt tribute to the everyday heroes of Cumbria—a region known not just for its natural beauty, but for the strength and warmth of its communities.

Quiet heroism

Bob Sutcliffe’s journey into art began after a distinguished international career in development and social justice. Yet it is here, among the hills, villages and valleys of Cumbria, that his latest and perhaps most personal project has taken root. Drawing on the landscape and people around him, Sutcliffe’s portraits reflect the depth and quiet heroism of Cumbrian life—from carers in Kendal to volunteers in Barrow, from community workers in Ulverston to neighbours in Grange-over-Sands.

Connection with the region

The Good Souls Exhibition showcases a powerful blend of portraiture and storytelling. Each painting and monochrome photograph is accompanied by a written profile, capturing not just a likeness, but a life: its challenges, its purpose, and its place within the wider Cumbrian tapestry. The result is a rich and resonant record of lives lived generously—often without recognition, but never without impact.

Sutcliffe’s artistic style, grounded in realism, is gentle and observant. His brushwork, whether in oil or acrylic, is imbued with care and respect, while Dawson’s photographs offer a striking counterbalance—intimate, immediate, and honest. Both artists share a deep connection to the region and a desire to reflect its human heart. This collaboration brings together different mediums, but a shared ethos: to elevate the unseen and celebrate the everyday.

A county-wide celebration

What began as a small, personal project has now grown into a county-wide celebration of compassion. Many of the individuals featured live and work right here in Cumbria, and the exhibition is as much a love letter to the region’s people as it is a collection of artwork. Visitors familiar with Cartmel, Coniston or Carlisle may well recognise the faces—or even the stories—on display.

Awarded an OBE for services to the community, Bob Sutcliffe continues to honour and uplift through his art and words. The Good Souls Exhibition stands as a cultural landmark in the county—one that recognises not only artistic achievement, but human decency.
We are honoured to host this exhibition at Holker Hall & Gardens, a place where history, heritage and community meet. As you explore these portraits and stories, we invite you to reflect on the quiet strength, generosity and enduring spirit that define Cumbria—and to consider the quiet good souls in your own life who deserve recognition.

The Good Souls Exhibition runs from 15th May to October 2025 in the Holker Courtyard Café Building. Entrance is Free.
