With the weather of the last few weeks, there’s no doubt that winter is here. We’ve had everything – wind, rain, sleet, snow, hail, and a couple of named storms. Even the rare bit of sun! And we’ll admit that there’s a very good case to be made for staying at home with central heating on! But, if you wrap up warm, and know that there’s a cup of coffee and a slice of cake waiting at the end of it, there’s not much better than a brisk winter walk. And at Holker Hall, we can offer you all three.

Why Visit Holker Hall Gardens This Winter

The gardens

Holker Hall gardens have been designed to provide interest all year round. Whether the bright blooms of spring and summer, the fiery colours of autumn, or the statuesque shapes of winter. So, if you’re looking for a gentle stroll, there’s plenty to see and do. We particularly love the Labyrinth in winter. Standing proud and exposed in what is usually a quiet corner of the Wildflower Meadow, our twelve monoliths can’t help but draw the eye and excite curiosity. While the Elliptical Garden looks majestic in the frost and snow.

The deer park

If you really want to stretch your legs, the Holker Hall deer park has 200 acres of rolling countryside for you to explore. And we can almost guarantee that you’ll meet some of our friendly resident deer en route. So, pull on your walking boots and grab your camera. Because, whatever the weather, there is always something worth seeing.

The café

Every long winters walk should be finished with a hot drink and a hearty meal. Or a slice of cake at the very least! And with a menu covering everything from sourdough pizza and homemade soups to delicious and delicate afternoon teas, there’s something to set every tastebud tingling at Holker’s Courtyard Café. You could also pop into the food hall and pick up some treats for later.

A little something extra

And if you needed any more of an incentive, Father Christmas will be visiting Holker at various dates throughout December. Just remember: booking is essential and limited tickets are available. So, secure your little monster’s space on the ‘nice list’ today.

Walking in winter has all kinds of health benefits. It helps your heart, it improves your mental wellbeing, and can support your mobility. So, why not take advantage of our incredible grounds, and pay a visit to Holker Hall this December?
