Spencer Compton Cavendish, 8th Duke of Devonshire (1833–1908). A leading figure in both the Liberal and later Liberal Unionist parties, he held major offices including Secretary of State for India, Lord President of the Council, and twice served as Leader of the Liberal Party. He turned down invitations to be Prime Minister three times.

Sunday 17th August (12 noon and 2:30pm):

Cavalier attitudes and coursing the deer, a look back to the English Civil War and the Cavaliers’ visit to “Howker” Hall on the anniversary of the direction-defining Battle of Preston (17th August 1648) , which sealed the royalist force’s fate.
